Grimsby Town Ladies 6

Lincoln Griffins 0

Grimsby Town Ladies kicked off their League season with a comprehensive 6-0 hammering of Lincoln Griffins at King George V Stadium on Sunday.

The Mariners were on top from the outset and took the lead on eight minutes when Gemma Hopkin sprung the offside trap, raced away from the defence and placed her shot into the bottom left hand corner.

Town could have added to their lead before the break. Hopkin was always a threat with her pace up front, and twice she broke down the right with Emily Mumby and Lyndsey Dye being inches away from converting. Ruth Ashton then had a shot that went narrowly wide of the target,

The Mariners added more pressure after the break and claimed their second on 51 minutes. A goalmouth scramble occurred and ended with Ashton slamming the ball home for a well-deserved goal.

It was all Grimsby from then on in, and a third goal arrived on the hour - Mumby and Hopkin linked up well through the middle and the latter claimed her second of the afternoon.

The goal of the game arrived on 76 minutes. Town won a free kick on the edge of the area and Mumby stepped up to fire the ball over the wall and into the net. Just four minutes later and Grimsby were 5-0 up, Hannah Taylor getting on the end of another dangerous cross.

The rout was completed in the closing minutes when Mumby claimed her second to make it 6-0 to the home side.
