Town See Off Lincoln To Go Top
Grimsby Town Ladies welcomed top of the league, Lincoln City to King George Stadium on Sunday, with many ex-Town players returning in the colours of City.
With a strong wind dictating the style of football being played, the game became a tough physical battle in all areas of the pitch. Town started well against the wind with Hopkin pressuring the city goal early. Town attempted to hold onto the ball in difficult conditions, but City had the majority of the play. Towns' back four were extremely competitive and held off the City attacks. Ashton and Goodwin were solid in the middle of the park, covering the pitch with energy and determination. With City attacking down the flanks and crosses flying into the area, Wallis in Towns' goal had an outstanding game, claiming every ball. With 35 minutes played, a through ball from the midfield set City number 10 clear through. Again, Wallis thwarted the shot on goal. Town went into the changing at half time at nil - nil having competed for 45 minutes in every area of the pitch.
With the wind at their backs, Town started the second half livelier. With Hopkin and Mumby pressurising the back four with runs in behind them. Town took the lead in the 50th minute when a superbly placed pass from Ibbett, allowed Mumby to beat the last defender with her first touch and clinically place the ball past the City Keeper. City responded by pushing forwards, playing some quick passing football, but Town held their ground well with the whole team closing City down. City equalised in the 74th minute, when a cross from the left was taken well by City's striker. Town responded with their mid-field getting forward to support their strikers. The pace of the game increased with both teams pushing for a win. Town with the wind at their backs started to play in City's half and on the 85th minute City cleared the ball from their area, giving Town a corner. Goodwin floated the ball into the box and as Mumby climbed to meet the cross, she was fowled from behind and Town were awarded a penalty. Centre back Burns calmly walked up to take the penalty. The City keeper parried the ball from the spot kick into the path of Burns who placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. With four minutes of normal time to play, Town were professional in their approach, holding onto the ball and keeping it in the corners. The final whistle went and Town celebrated their win. With every player working for 90 minutes, this game showed Town how much they can achieve.
