Macca - Presentation from Barry Fry

Town started the match looking for their sixth straight away win to set a new Town record, and Macca made his 600th League appearance for the Mariners. Town fielded the same starting XI as had

Peterborough broke early and David Farrell lifted the ball over the bar after James Quinn had seemingly handled in the start of the attack.

Peterborough won the first corner after 3 minutes to no avail.

Kalala played the ball about in midfield, and then to McDermott whose cross was met by Reddy who fired in a shot which was diverted for a corner.

Town came again and won a second corner after Cohen got in a good cross, which eventually came to Kalala for a shot.

Gary Croft

Crofty booked

Gary Croft tackled David Farrell as Peterborough broke, and received the first yellow after just 6 minutes.

Rob Jones was injured, apparently through landing badly, but he was fit enough to continue after treatment.

The game had been open right from the start, and in the first quarter of an hour there looked to be goals galore in the match. Reddy did well in taking the ball upfield, and then Macca had to deal with Farrell taking the ball from his toes and preventing the corner too.

Steve Mildenhall

Burton forced Mildenhall into a good save which he struggled to hold from fully 30 yards.

Cohen, Parkinson and Croft combined on the left, with Peterborough eventually gaining a throw when the ball came off Gary Jones. Peterborough went up to the Town end, but Whittle and Mildenhall dealt comfortably with the threat.

Town gained a corner, and Kalala's first shot was blocked, and when he got the ball back he won a throw, and then a corner from which Rob Jones almost scored on the 26th minute with Gary Jones sliding in to try desperately to knock the ball home.

Quinn had a free header when Holden slipped the ball over, but Quinn's header was just off target. Peterborough came again with the ball this time flashing across the goal as Peter Gain whipped the ball left-footed goalwards.

Kalala and Parkinson had a discussion over a Town free-kick, and when McDermott put the ball over, Mark Tyler in the Posh goal had to be at full stretch to grab the ball before Rob Jones could nod home.

Whittle caught Quinn just outside the box, conceding a free kick 26 yards from goal in a central position, and after a big build-up the ball was curled over the bar.

Farrell came in, beat Kalala and McDermott, but couldn't get a strike on target.

Mildenhall took Town's free-kick and managed to reach Rob Jones who couldn't re-direct his header onto target, and when the ball came back to the Town end, Whittle seemed to be fouled but Referee Sutton of Lincolnshire gave the Posh a free-kick, and then a corner.

Two minutes were added, and with the very last shot of the half 600-match man McDermott tried his luck, striking the ball wide.

Half-time: Town 0 - 0 Peterborough

Gritton replaced Cohen and Barwick replaced Parkinson at half time.

Kalala took Town's first free-kick, which started a period of Town possession, and it led to Town's opening goal.

Gary Jones

Goal!: 47:11: From the period of Town possession, the throw-in came to Gritton, whose cross was diverted home by Gary Jones with speed of thought and action!

Kalala conceded a free kick on the corner of the 'D' with 5 minutes of the second half gone and Rob Jones headed clear before Gain curled the ball in and wide.

Whittle had to concede a corner to preserve Town's lead as Peterborough came at the Mariners, and that was followed by a big shout from the Peterborough fans for handball, but referee Sutton gave the kick to Town.

Kalala was booked for his fourth foul of the second half.

Mildenhall grabbed the free-kick, and tried to calm down the Town team who were under the cosh after taking the lead. Kalala brought off a good tackle and got Gritton away.

Bolland was fouled by Gain, who was also putting himself about, and the Town man had a word with his Posh counterpart. As the ball went in the right part of the field, Macca won a free-kick to give Town a breather, before which Peterborough took off Logan for Crow.

Newton cut in with a one-two, and fortunately his right-foot shot was placed wide of Mildenhall's goal.

Peterborough's next corner was headed clear by Rob Jones, as all the telling play was taking place in the Town half.

Barwick gave Town a breathing space when he hit the ball upfield for a Reddy chase which resulted in a throw-in.

Gary Jones raced onto a ball, and was fouled, though the referee whistled for it a long time after waiting to see if there was advantage.

Northern Ireland's James Quinn was replaced by Trevor Benjamin on 67 minutes.

Reddy went on a run, played it back to Macca, then Bolland, before Reddy went past another two players. By the three-quarter stage, Town were coming more into the match after the hectic pressure following the Mariners goal.

Gritton and Kalala set Town off on a nice little series of interpassing moves and when Reddy crossed the keeper just managed to pluck the ball out of the air.

Gary Jones conceded another Peterborough corner, which he again headed over for a second corner in quick succession, and Carden hit the ball against Croft for another corner, as Macca calmly headed back to Mildenhall under pressure. Peterborough brough on their third sub when Semple came on. Semple was immediately involved, and Mildenhall had to be alert to keep Town's lead intact.

Croft saw Jones, but his cross was intercepted. Newton played forward and Macca dealt with the first danger, and Carden and Holden interchanged to keep the pressure on the Mariners, with a shot eventually coming in but being directed over the top.

On 79 minutes Tom Newey came on for Gary Jones.

Macca cleared to the halfway line, and Newey got in a good challenge. Newey headed the ball out for a throw, and it took a Bolland challenge to stop Posh progress, and when Benjamin went down in the box, Mildenhall was able to field the ball comfortably.

Croft's next free-kick was aimed at Rob Jones, but Tyler collected.

With five minutes left, Macca had to concede a corner, and when it fell to a Peterborough player Rob Jones did enough to put him off.

Gritton won a free-kick which used up more valuable time.

There was a let-off for Town with just over a minute of normal time left. With a Posh man down, the home side continued and the ball was played across the goal with Benjamin missing as he slid in. Barwick then conceded a throw near the corner flag. Newey cleared to Reddy as 4 minutes of time was signalled. Peterborough came again and Whittle put off the Peterborough forward and Mildenhall collected. It was all hands to the pump action, as the referee gave Peterborough disputed corner with Town hanging on. The ball was scrambled away for another corner, and then another, and this time Peterborough smashed the ball over!

Bolland sent Reddy on a chase, and he did enough to win a throw. 80 seconds left.

Macca gave Reddy another run, who went for the corner, and Burton hit forward, a great block stopped Peterborough scoring and then the next shot was smashed over the bar ... and that was the last chance for Posh!

Congratulations to Town's side for creating a new away-wins-on-the-trot record of six, and on Macca's 600th League appearance! Can life get better?

Town 1 - 0 Peterborough
