Bury vs Grimsby Town
 3 - 0
Date:
26/08/2006
Venue:
Gigg Lane
Attendance:
2118
Referee:
R Lewis

New signings Nick Fenton and Danny Boshell were both included in the side at Gigg Lane. Michael Reddy was again named amongst the Town substitutes.

Paul Bolland was named captain with Justin Whittle on the bench.

A poor first half performance by the Mariners gave them an uphill task after the break. Although Town improved in the second half, they failed to seriously trouble Kasper Schmeichel in the Bury goal.

GOAL! 5 mins. Disappointingly, from the first corner of the game, Bury took the lead. Adams' corner to the far post was met by an unmarked Youngs to head past Phil Barnes.

The Mariners tried to hit back, McIntosh headed on a Newey corner and Rankin fired just over.

GOAL! 19 mins. But from another swinging Adams corner Bury doubled their advantage. This time his kick was to the near post with Youngs out-jumping the Town defence.

The Mariners tried to hit back straight away as Rankin turned Challinor, but his shot was well saved by Schmeichel.

Mariners' fans held their breaths minutes later as Adams went down in the Town box, but after a few seconds of deliberation, the referee gave a free kick to Town and booked Nicky Adams for simulation.

GOAL! And with 2 minutes added on at the end of the first period, Adams fired past Barnes from 25 yards to complete Town's first half misery.

Half-Time: Bury 3 Grimsby Town 0

Peter Beagrie and Michael Reddy were on for the start of the second half, Gary Jones and Harkins making way.

And Reddy almost put Rankin away at the start of the second half but his pass was intercepted.

Town had a chance to get back in the game on 56 minutes when Michael Reddy was brought down on the edge of the box. Beagrie took charge and his effort was just over the bar.

Justin Whittle replaced McIntosh on 65 minutes, we suspect because the Huddersfield loanee had taken a bump on the head moments earlier.

Nick Fenton's optimistic header failed to trouble Schmeichel on 74 minutes.

Toner's through ball searched for Bore but was unfortunately intercepted and cleared for a corner, with Rankin waiting for a slip up.

Town had a shout for a penalty when Newey looked to be brought down, but the referee said play on.

And Fenton's cross-shot was easily gathered by Schmeichel with Reddy looking to get on the end of it .
