The Mariners made one change from the side which lost at Rochdale in midweek, Danny Boshell coming in for the injured Ciaran Toner.
Chester almost took the lead in the early stages. A good run by Martinez, and his shot from just outside the box was heading for the top corner, but Barnes brilliantly clawed it away.
And minutes later the hero became the villain as Barnes' poor kick fell at the feet of Wilson, who tried to lob the Town keeper from 35 yards, but his effort cleared Barnes and the Mariners' bar.
Town were working hard and began to get themselves into the game.
Peter Bore was put away in what looked a promising situation but he was knocked off the ball and dispossessed.
From a Town corner, Ravenhill went down clutching his head, but the referee waved play on and Fenton's shot was high and wide.
The Mariners were winning the battle in midfield but neither were creating any chances of note.

The Mariners started the send half well and Bore's effort from 25 yards rattled the Chester crossbar. And Danny Boshell saw an effort from a similar distance go over Danby's bar.
Ricky Ravenhill became the first player to be booked innocuous challenge on 62 minutes.
Some good pressure by Town resulted in Boshell stinging the keeper's hands from 25 yards.
Barnes got down well to his right to deny Wilson.
Isaiah Rankin was replaced by Andy Taylor on 75 minutes, as Graham Rodger looked to provide a spark up front.
Wilson was allowed to get a shot away from 25 yards but it flashed wide of Barnes' post.
GOAL! With the game heading for a draw, Gary Jones picked up the ball in the box, looked to have lost his chance, but neither the covering defender or keeper dealt with the situation and Jones nipped in to score.
GOAL! But the Mariners weren't done, and on 93 minutes Andy Taylor got away down the left, the youngster showed his pace, cut in and curled the ball just inside the post. The goal was Taylor's first ever in professional football.
