TOWN boss Alan Buckley made just one change from the side that won at Milton Keynes Dons on Easter Saturday, with Peter Till replacing Peter Bore on the right of midfield.
Despite a decent start to the game, Town found themselves a goal down on 22 minutes.
Newey's pass down the left was cut out and cleared up into the Mariners half and to Nick Fenton, his attempted back pass was short and Barnes' his hurried clearance went straight to Grant. His shot was brilliantly blocked by Whittle, but the loose ball fell to McGleish who stroked the ball into an empty net from an acute angle.
2 minutes later and another defensive error gifted the visitors another goal.
Fenton slipped under pressure from Easter, who took the ball on before placing the ball past Barnes into the bottom left hand corner.
Town boss Alan Buckley responded by bringing on James Hunt and Gary Jones, switching to a 4-4-2 formation.
And Jones was straight into the action as he caused problems in the Wanderers defence from a Tom Newey free kick.
A good burst by Ciaran Toner saw him attack the Wycombe goal before curling his effort just wide of the right post.
From another Newey free kick Justin's Whittle's header lacked power and was wide.
Half Time: Town 0 Wycombe 2
The Mariners came out fighting and began to take control of the game, but the visitors remained resolute at the back.
The Town boss switched to a 4-3-3 in a desperate attempt to try and get something out of the game.
John McDermott, who was playing his 750th game for Town, was substituted and left the field to rapturous applause on 60 minutes.
But on 71 minutes Town were given a lifeline.
A Wanderers clearance hit Paul Bolland before falling nicely to Gary Jones to who slotted the ball under Batista.
Minutes later Town had the chance to pull level. A great through ball by Fenton put Danny North clear, but with the youngster edging wider and wider, his effort on goal was easily saved by the keeper.
But with just seven minutes remaining, Town completed what looked like an unlikely comeback at half time.
Gary Jones' goal bound effort was blocked on the edge of the Wanderers box and went for a corner. The resulting kick eventually found its way to Paul Bolland who swivelled and volleyed an unstoppable shot into the left corner, past a despairing Batista.
