Match report by David Elliott at Blundell Park
TWO moments of added-time madness cost Grimsby Town what would have been a priceless three points at home to Bradford City.
The visitors equalised with a Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu penalty given for a foul by Justin Whittle in the last of three extra minutes.
And that goal came after Phil Barnes had been shown the red card for handling outside his area under little pressure as the clock passed the 90-minute mark.
After a first half where neither side had created many chances in front of goal, Town took the lead four minutes after the restart with Shaleum Logan's second goal for the club.
Town then had to withstand a spell of sustained pressure from the visitors before launching a series of attacks which almost led to their advantage being doubled.
Logan went close again and Fenton saw a header hit the post but Bradford refused to give up and with their last possible opportunity, they eventually got their reward.
Martin Butler made his first Blundell Park start for Town as Alan Buckley named an unchanged side from last Saturday's defeat at Wycombe.
The Mariners started in a 4-4-2 formation with Phil Barnes in goal.
Shaleum Logan was fit enough to start at right back after undergoing treatment at parent club Manchester City on a knock picked up last week and Nick Fenton, Justin Whittle and Tom Newey made up the back four.
Paul Bolland missed out against his home-town club in midfield after failing to shake off an injury. His place was taken again by James Hunt.Danny Boshell, another Bradford boy, lined up alongside Hunt, with Ciaran Toner on the left and Peter Till on the right.
Butler was joined in attack by another ex-Bradford player in Isaiah Rankin, while Andy Taylor, Gary Montgomery, Ryan Bennett, Gary Jones and Jamie Clarke were the Town subs.
Familiar names in the visitors line-up included Congolese striker Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu.The ex-Sheffield Wednesday and Darlington striker was Bradford's top scorer going into this game, having scored four times this campaign.
Another recognisable name was that of David Wetherall, who was Bradford's record signing when he joined from Leeds in 1999, while on-loan midfielder Nicky Law is the son of the former Mariners manager with the same name.
Both teams would be desperate to collect the three points after poor runs of form.Town were looking to halt a sequence of four straight defeats, while Stuart McCall's Bradford had only taken one point from their previous six games.
Despite that form though, an impressive following had made the journey from West Yorkshire, with over a thousand supporters gathered in the Osmond Stand.
Town won the first free kick in the first minute after Rankin was fouled but Toner's effort hit the Bradford wall from 25 yards.
Then the first Bradford attack ended with Barnes getting down well to stop a shot by Ndumbu-Nsungu from the edge of the area.
Rankin was looking to impress against his old club and he went close in the seventh minute, beating Wetherall before his shot was saved by 'keeper Rhys Evans from an acute angle.
Town were playing the passing football the supporters have been used to this season and were creating some danger for the Bradford defence at times.
12 minutes were on the clock when a cross from Newey almost found its way through to Rankin after more good approach play led to Till crossing from the right.
The game stopped after Evans collided with Rankin and the Bradford stopper received treatment for a shoulder injury.
A free kick for a push on Butler then gave Town another chance to pressurise the visiting defence and the move eventually ended in Evans saving from Till after a ball into the box by Toner.
Then on 19 minutes, a cross by Newey from the left led to Rankin heading over.
It was apparent that Evans was still feeling the effects of his shoulder problem but with no reserve keeper on the bench, the former Chelsea trainee was forced to soldier on.
Grimsby won a free kick on 22 minutes midway inside the Bradford half but the ball was cleared to Omar Daley. He ran half the length of the pitch before passing to Ndumbu-Nsungu and the striker fired straight at Barnes.
Two minutes later, Evans was finally forced off with his injury and his place in goal was taken by centre back Mark Bower.Evans was replaced on the field by another centre back in Matthew Clarke.
Bradford had the next chance when they won a free kick on the edge of the box but Nicky Law shot just over the bar.
Town had their first chance to test Bower with a corner from the right. But in the end, he wasn't called upon as Fenton headed over from Toner's kick.
The visitors had an opportunity to go ahead when Kylo Nix crossed low from the left side of the area on the half-hour.The ball ran across the six yard box but Barry Conlon couldn't quite connect with it properly, sending it out for a goal kick.
A free kick for handball gave Town another chance to test the stand-in keeper but again, Toner's kick came to nothing as Bower was allowed to claim the ball.
Bradford had a corner on 36 minutes after Fenton blocked Ndumbu-Nsungu's path to the by-line.The ball was headed across Barnes' goal from the kick before going wide for a goal kick.
The away side then had a free kick on the halfway line for a foul by Toner. The kick was cleared for a throw in, which was hooked away by Toner.
Three minutes of added time were allowed at the end of a first half that had seen plenty of passing and movement from both sides but few clear opportunities in front of goal.
Despite being the better team, the Mariners had not caused enough problems for the Bradford defence, especially after they had played over 20 minutes against a team with a centre back wearing the goalkeeper's jersey.
That was something Town would try to address in the second period, while the Bradford boss Stuart McCall would probably have been happy to get to half time level, considering the injury to Evans.
The first action of the second half saw Town awarded a free kick on the left.Toner's kick was headed away by Conlon.
The next time Town went forward they finally made the breakthrough.A mistake between the stand-in keeper Bower and substitute Clarke on 49 minutes presented SHALEUM LOGAN with the ball on the right of the area.
He floated it back over the stranded Bower and into the net at the Pontoon end.
Bradford tried to get back on level terms two minutes later but Ndumbu-Nsungu's 20-yard shot was beaten away by Barnes.
The Town stopper was then called into action again straight away when he dived to stop a shot by Kylo Nix.
And then a low cross by Ndumbu-Nsungu was halted by Barnes as the away side began to pile on the pressure.
A free kick 30 yards out on 53 minutes gave Bradford their next chance. And again, Barnes had to make a save, tipping Paul Heckingbottom's shot over the bar.
Three minutes later, Ndumbu-Nsungu was at the heart of the action yet again as he beat Fenton on a run into the box before shooting. And once more, it was Barnes who was able to divert the ball for a corner.
Logan had a chance to extend Town's lead when his shot from 20 yards was deflected on 59 minutes. It looked to be heading towards goal but trickled just wide, before Fenton headed against the post from the resulting corner.
Then, after Town won a free kick near the right corner flag, Newey's ball in found Rankin and his back-header flew just wide from six yards.
It had been an all-action opening to the second half, with Town scoring, then having to withstand Bradford pressure before almost going further ahead.
Toner tried his luck with a shot from 30 yards after cutting in from the left on 68 minutes but it was deflected for a corner.
Till then had to cover defensively after a break by substitute Alex Rhodes, who had replaced Nix.
Town made their first tactical move on 71 minutes, sending on Ryan Bennett in place of Peter Till and pushing Logan forward into a right wing position.
Bradford then won a free kick midway in the Town halfafter a foul by Fenton, but the ball into the box was headed out for a corner by Butler.
Boshell brought the ball out after the low corner routine didn't work but the Town man's progress was halted abruptly by a late challenge from Omar Daley.
The away side used their final substitution to replace Barry Conlon with Luke Medley with 13 minutes to go.
The west Yorkshire side then won another free kick 40 yards from goal for a foul by Butler.
Before the kick was taken, Town sent Andy Taylor on in place of Rankin as the Mariners looked to increase their lead with nine minutes still to play.
Town got a free kick for handball 25 yards out and right of centre.Newey saw his shot tipped over the bar by Bower.
The Mariners had a let-off with four minutes left as Bradford thought they had equalised.A cross came into the Town box and as Newey ended up on the ground, the ball was put into the net.
Luckily for Town though, referee David Foster was on the spot and he immediately blew for a push on Newey.
As Grimsby looked to close out the win, they were dealt a massive blow in the final minute.
After having a good afternoon, Barnes took one step too many as he claimed a ball, handling outside his area when he could have headed clear.
Mr Foster showed him the mandatory red card and the Mariners moved to bring on Gary Montgomery for Taylor, the Town reserve goalkeeper getting an unexpected debut between the sticks for the three minutes of added time.
As the free kick was finally about to be taken, Fenton and Wetherall were booked for an off the ball altercation in the box.
Massive cheers of relief were heard around Blundell Park when the free kick was eventually taken as Montgomery saved the initial shot before the rebound was headed over.
But those cheers proved premature when in the final added minute, Whittle brought down Ndumbu-Nsungu in the box and Mr Foster pointed to the spot.
NDUMBU-NSUNGU made no mistake from the penalty kick, slotting underneath Montgomery as he dived to his left to claim a point for his side.
