Match report by David Elliott at the Galpharm Stadium

FORMER Grimsby striker Phil Jevons came back to haunt his old club by scoring the goals that knocked the Mariners out of this season's FA Cup.

Jevons struck on 52 and 62 minutes after Town and Huddersfield had gone in level at half time. And then substitute Luke Beckett added a third five minutes from the end to send the Terriers through to round three.

Huddersfield had created the better chances in the first half but Gary Montgomery kept his side in it with a string of great saves.

Town battled well in the opening 45 minutes although they offered little threat in attacking areas.

But the half time substitution of Andy Taylor coming on for Peter Till upset the balance of the side and after Jevons put the hosts ahead, there looked to be only one winner.

And when Beckett scored the third, the 1,009 travelling Grimsby fans began to head for the exits, their FA Cup adventure over for another year.

Town boss Alan Buckley named an unchanged starting XI after the superb victory at Barnet last Saturday.

That meant Montgomery continued in goal, leaving regular number one Phil Barnes forced to sit on the bench after recovering from illness.

Ryan Bennett, Nick Fenton and Barnsley loanee Rob Atkinson formed a central defensive trio with Sam Hird on the right and Tom Newey on the left playing as wing-backs.

Peter Till, James Hunt and Ciaran Toner made up the midfield, with Gary Jones and Danny North in attack.

Paul Bolland wasn't deemed fit enough to start but made a welcome return to the bench alongside Barnes, Isaiah Rankin, Andy Taylor and Peter Bore.

The Huddersfield line-up included a familiar face to Town fans in the form of Jevons. The ex-Mariners striker is on loan with the Terriers from Bristol City and was given permission by the Robins to play today.

He took his place in attack with Andy Booth, while former Everton striker Danny Cademarteri had to settle for a place on the bench despite impressing in recent outings.

The hosts' line-up also included former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair and further firepower from the bench would come from striker Luke Beckett.

Huddersfield would be out to get revenge for their Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at Blundell Park in September, where goals from Fenton, Toner, Rankin and Till saw the Mariners run out 4-1 winners after Michael Collins had put Andy Ritchie's side ahead.

Both sides would, of course, also be looking to secure their place in tomorrow's draw for round three.

The game started quietly, with neither side making any impression in front of goal in the opening five minutes.

Town, dressed in a Manchester United-style red and black kit, were the first to threaten when Toner controlled the ball and shot from 20 yards, forcing a diving save from home keeper Matt Glennon.

And at that point, the game was mostly being played inside the Huddersfield half, with the Mariners pinning their hosts back and forcing a string of attacking throw-ins as well as a couple of early corners.

Grimsby almost worked an opening on 13 minutes when Newey carried the ball over the halfway line before finding North. He then brought in Toner but the midfielder couldn't find a final ball and the move broke down.

Andy Holdsworth had Huddersfield's first shot two minutes later but it didn't trouble Montgomery, curling well wide of the post in front of the travelling Mariners supporters.

Then Jevons saw a header drop just over after a cross by Sinclair from the right.

Faint appeals for a penalty were heard from the away section of the ground when Jones made a run into the box before going down between two home defenders. But those appeals didn't extend to the pitch and referee Paul Taylor rightly waved play on.

Malvin Kamara was the first to test Montgomery when he hit a fierce shot from the edge of the area on 20 minutes. But the Town stopper was equal to the task, pushing the stinging drive away from danger.

The hosts had woken up though and it was they who were causing all of the problems now.

Town were forced to withstand a period of pressure on their goal as the west Yorkshire side appeared to be getting closer to breaking the deadlock.

James Hunt was the first of the afternoon to be shown a yellow card as he chopped down Kamara on the half-hour.

Right winger Kamara was causing all of the problems for the Mariners defence and he had the next opportunity, picking the ball up just inside the Town half and easily beating Newey before shooting from 18 yards.Again though, Montgomery made the save.

After that scare, Town began to settle down and started to get the ball in the Huddersfield half again. But Glennon was still having a far more comfortable afternoon in goal than his Mariners counterpart.

Huddersfield won a corner on 40 minutes after a ball across the face of goal was cut out by Fenton.Town cleared but the ball came back and Montgomery had to collect another cross, this time from Ronnie Wallwork.

Then a good attacking move ended with Sinclair shooting from just inside the box, only to see the effort saved once again, Montgomery diving to his right.

Town won a corner two minutes before the break and from it, the ball broke to Fenton on the left of the area.He tried to pull the ball back across goal but couldn't prevent it from crossing the by-line for a goal kick.

One minute of added time was allowed and it was played inside the Huddersfield half as Grimsby finished the first half strongly.

As the half time whistle blew, the Mariners would have been happy to be going in level as Huddersfield had enjoyed the better chances. But Town had competed well and deserved their 0-0 scoreline at the interval.

Town made a change before the restart, with Andy Taylor replacing Peter Till.

The hosts began the second half brightly, attacking from the start and allowing Town very little of the possession.

And they made their early dominance pay by taking the lead.

Huddersfield won a free kick in a dangerous position 30 yards out on 51 minutes and Wallwork's shot was deflected for a corner.

The Mariners failed to clear the corner and after something of a scramble in the six-yard box, PHIL JEVONS smashed the ball home to put the hosts ahead.

After the goal, the Terriers looked to push on and get a second as quickly as possible to put the game beyond Town.Jevons had another shot on 55 minutes but this time it went over the bar.

The next time Huddersfield went forward, they got that second goal, and it was that man JEVONS again.Kamara broke down the right and sidefooted the ball across the six yard box for the unmarked former Mariners favourite to stroke it into the empty net.

Town's first chance of the second half saw Taylor break down the right and move into the box before crossing for North, but his header was kept out.

Alan Buckley then made a double substitution, with Peter Bore and Paul Bolland replacing Bennett and North.

Buckley had experimented with a 4-3-3 system for the opening 20 minutes of the second half but had seen his side concede twice in that period without ever threatening at the other end and so moved to 4-4-2 with the introduction of Bolland and Bore.

Jevons probably should have completed his hat-trick on 69 minutes when he was played through on goal. But his shot wasn't powerful enough and the deficit remained at two goals.

And it proved to be Jevons' last opportunity to add to his goal tally as he was replaced by Danny Cademarteri soon afterwards, earning a standing ovation from the home supporters for his efforts.

Cademarteri soon began causing problems for Town, cutting in from the right side of midfield and giving Bore a torrid time.

Huddersfield were attacking almost at will and were taking the game to Town, who had been restricted to very few attacks, no corners and just one attempt on goal in the second half.

Andy Ritchie sent on another striker, Luke Beckett, to replace Booth with ten minutes to go.

And the two substitutes combined on 85 minutes to put the final nail in Town's FA Cup coffin.Cadamarteri shot against the post from 20 yards and BECKETT was there to knock in the rebound from close range.

That goal was the signal for a large chunk of the travelling Grimsby supporters to head for the exits and begin their journey home to North East Lincolnshire.

Huddersfield made their last change with four minutes left, taking off the impressive Kamara and sending on Michael Collins in his place.

Three minutes of time were added and they were played out with neither side threatening to trouble the scoreboard operator further.

Huddersfield had already sealed their passage through to the third round, while in truth, Town had never looked like joining the big clubs in tomorrow's draw.

While second best for most of the first half, Town had at least been in the contest but after the break, there had only been one side in control.

The substitution of Till for Taylor at half time seemed to lead to the Mariners losing their balance and after Jevons' goals, there was only going to be one winner.

And by the time Grimsby had made the switch to 4-4-2, it was too late.

Town could only manage two attempts on goal over the whole 90 minutes and when faced with opposition with the attacking quality of Huddersfield, that was never going to be enough.
