Capped a fantastic season last season by clearing up at the Player of the Year awards night - including the Supporters' Player of the Year award.
Barnes began his career with Rotherham as a trainee but after just two appearances for the Millers he was snapped up by Blackpool for a fee of £100,000 in August 1997. Barnes spent seven successful seasons at Bloomfield Road where he won the Division Three Play-Offs in 2001 and two Football League Trophies in 2002 and 2004. Barnes played 170 times for the Seasiders before Neil Warnock took him to Bramall Lane in the summer of 2004 as understudy to Paddy Kenny.
Phil's chances at the Blades were limited and he played just five times but he impressed on loan at both Torquay and QPR last season and Warnock was eager to keep the player at Bramall Lane as United prepare for their Premiership assault. However, the lure of first-team football was too much for Phil and he opted to move to the Mariners. It appears that the Blades' loss is Town's gain as Barnes comes with glittering references from his former employees.Season 2008 - 09
