GTFC Debut: 06.08.05 home v Oxford United, League Two, D1-1.

Attacking full-back Tom Newey has one of the best left foots in League Two and he has used to good effect since joining the Mariners in the summer of 2005. Tom was a trainee at Leeds United but with first team opportunities limited he was loaned out to Cambridge United and Darlington respectively.

A permanent switch to Leyton Orient followed in July 2003 but Tom spent just over 18 months in the capital before rejoining Cambridge on loan in January 2005. The move to the Abbey Stadium was made permanent in March 2005 but Newey couldn't save the club from dropping into the Conference and he was on the move again that summer.

Since returning 'up north', Tom has flourished and is one of the most consistent performers in the Mariners' ranks. He can often be seen rampaging down the wing to aid the team's attacks and he uses his athleticism in defence as well. Newey has good spring for a full-back and he was even used as an emergency centre-half at times last season.
